Sustainability
At Mount Macedon Primary School, we are incredibly fortunate to learn in one of Victoria's most beautiful natural environments. Surrounded by native bushland, towering forests and abundant wildlife, our students develop a deep appreciation for the unique ecosystems that make our community so special. We believe this connection to nature brings with it a responsibility to care for and protect our environment for future generations.
In 2026, Mount Macedon Primary School, sustainability is more than a program, it's a part of who we are. Guided by our International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), our students are empowered to take meaningful action and understand that even small changes can have a significant impact on the environment.
Each year our student-led Waste Warriors identify waste reduction priorities at our school. Through inquiry, student voice, and collaboration, they investigated how much waste our school was producing and explored practical ways to reduce the amount of rubbish sent to landfill.
Our Actions
Our students led several initiatives that have transformed waste management across the school:
-
Introduced a three-bin waste system in every classroom, aligned with the Macedon Ranges Shire Council waste collection system.
-
Educated students and staff on correctly sorting landfill, recycling and food organics.
-
Established a soft plastics recycling program.
-
Introduced a 10-cent container collection program, encouraging students and families to recycle eligible bottles and cans while raising funds for future sustainability projects.
-
Installed worm tubes in the school gardens, allowing food scraps to be composted directly into the soil.
-
Achieved zero food waste from classroom fruit breaks by composting organic waste through our garden systems.
-
Embedded waste education into classroom learning through our IB PYP Units of Inquiry and STEM curriculum.
-
Partnered with Emily from Sustainability Victoria, who works with every class fortnightly, supporting students to investigate sustainability, biodiversity, ecosystems, River Detectives, and environmental stewardship.
Student Voice
"We learned that rubbish doesn't just disappear. If we sort it properly, we can recycle more and help animals and the environment." – Year 4 Student
"I remind my family at home which bin things go in now." – Year 2 Student
"The worm tubes are my favourite because our fruit scraps help the garden grow." – Prep Student
The Impact
Our school's waste reduction efforts have produced measurable improvements:
-
Significant reduction in landfill waste generated by the school.
-
Increased recycling rates across every classroom.
-
Zero food waste from classroom fruit breaks.
-
Improved student understanding of responsible waste disposal.
-
Students confidently teaching peers and families about recycling and sustainability.
-
Increased student ownership of caring for our environment.
Our Waste Warriors continue to monitor waste, educate our school community and look for new opportunities to improve our environmental footprint.
Connecting to the IB Primary Years Programme
This project is an authentic example of the IB PYP in action. Students identified a real-world problem, investigated solutions, collaborated with others and took meaningful action to improve their school community.
Throughout the project, students demonstrated the attributes of the IB Learner Profile, becoming:
-
Caring by protecting the environment.
-
Thinkers by solving real sustainability challenges.
-
Communicators by educating others about waste reduction.
-
Principled by taking responsibility for their actions.
-
Reflective by continually improving their practices.
This learning also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Responsible Consumption and Production (Goal 12) and Climate Action (Goal 13).
Looking Ahead
Our sustainability journey continues.
In 2026, students are building on this success by:
-
Working towards our ResourceSmart Schools Sustainability Star Rating.
-
Continuing biodiversity and River Detectives projects.
-
Monitoring school water usage through our newly installed SWEP smart water monitoring system.
-
Expanding sustainability learning with Sustainability Victoria.
-
Continuing to inspire positive environmental action across our school and wider community.
At Mount Macedon Primary School, our students know that every action, no matter how small, can make a difference. Together, we are creating a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future.

At the start of the year in 2025, the MMPS Waste Worriers proudly implemented a recycling system across the school - general waste, paper and cardboard, general recycling and green waste, aligning with the Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s waste collection model. This important initiative has helped students develop a deeper understanding of sustainability, waste management, and the environmental impact of everyday choices.
We have also expanded our recycling efforts to include soft plastic recycling and 10c bottle and can collection, further reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill. Through these programs, students are empowered to take meaningful action within their school and local community while developing a strong sense of environmental responsibility.
Aligned with our International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), these experiences encourage students to be caring, knowledgeable, and principled learners who recognise their role in creating a more sustainable future. Students are encouraged to think critically about real-world environmental issues and take action that positively impacts both local and global communities.
These initiatives have already helped us significantly reduce the number of rubbish removal bins required each week while fostering lifelong habits that support a cleaner, greener future for all.

During Term 4 of 2025, our students, with the support of dedicated parent helpers, transformed the garden beside the STEM building into a peaceful sensory garden. Designed to help cool the area and encourage local wildlife, the space provides a calm environment where students can pause, observe, and connect with nature. With plants to touch, smell, and watch, the garden has become a welcoming space thoughtfully created by our students to enjoy, reflect, and find moments of calm throughout the day.
Aligned with our International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), this project encourages students to be caring, reflective, and active contributors within their environment. Through hands-on involvement in designing and creating the space, students developed an understanding of sustainability, wellbeing, and the importance of taking action to improve their community. The sensory garden reflects our commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences that nurture both student wellbeing and environmental awareness.

In 2024, our students and school community upgraded the classroom garden beds into vibrant sensory gardens featuring local native and edible plants.
Aligned with our International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), this project encouraged students to be caring, reflective, and knowledgeable learners while building an understanding of sustainability and environmental responsibility. Through hands-on learning experiences, students explored how plants support wellbeing, biodiversity, and healthy living, while helping to create engaging outdoor spaces that can be enjoyed by the whole school community.

In 2023, our students and sustainability team upgraded the garden beds to include worm tubes as part of our commitment to reducing waste and caring for the environment.
Aligned with our International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), this initiative encouraged students to take meaningful action through sustainable practices and develop as caring, principled, and responsible global citizens. Students learned about composting, food cycles, and the environmental impact of waste, while actively contributing to real-world solutions within our school community.
We are incredibly proud to now operate with zero food waste, demonstrating how student action and environmental awareness can create positive and lasting change.

In 2022, Mount Macedon Primary School proudly installed solar panels as part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The solar project supports our school in reducing energy consumption and lowering our environmental footprint, while also providing authentic learning opportunities for students to explore renewable energy and sustainable practices in action.
Aligned with our International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), the project encourages students to develop as knowledgeable, caring, and responsible global citizens who understand the importance of protecting the environment for future generations. Through real-world connections like our solar initiative, students are encouraged to think critically about sustainability and the role they can play in creating positive change within their local and global communities.
Our solar panels are an important step toward creating a greener, more sustainable future for our school and wider community.
